Ibi has a relaxed way of presenting and she immediately brought everyone together by asking and inviting questions. I was excited to hear what she had to say. Besides working at her craft, she teaches Novel Writing at the University of Toronto School of Continuing Studies, is a mentor for other writers, and does so much more that! I read her debut novel Skinny and love her voice. Ibi has three novels on the bookshelves right now, all well-reviewed. MJ introduced Ibi Kaslik, our speaker for Sunday, March 10. I always love the opportunity to spend an afternoon with all of these great people, but that is not why we’re here.

Our Chair, MJ, and Special Events Coordinator, Doug, brought us up to date on events, book selling opportunities, and our draws – one for a free meeting and one for raffle prizes. The room was packed and full of anticipation. I had the warm feeling of being with my tribe, people who understand my faraway looks and character-driven comments. I saw lots of people I hadn’t seen since last month and had a chance during the networking time before the meeting to catch up. Kaslik states that she is currently working on three new pieces of prose, one which she claims is titled Mini and the Courage Poncho, a book illustrated by Stef Lenk and aimed toward children.We arrived, checked out the room and the food table, then found our spaces. Although Kaslik says 'It's definitely based on a world that I know', she has brushed off claims that the connection goes very deep, saying 'it would be mistaken and scurrilous to try to identify individual people'

She attended the Etobicoke School of the Arts with members of the band and helped them on their first tour of Canada and the United States. It has been suggested that the band in the novel is based partially on Broken Social Scene. Her second novel, The Angel Riots, about a rising indie rock band from Montreal, was published by Penguin Canada in February 2008. In 2007/08, Kaslik served as the 22nd writer-in-residence at the Regina Public Library in Regina, Saskatchewan. Skinny also appeared on the New York Times best sellers list for two consecutive weeks in 2008. It was shortlisted for the Books in Canada First Novel Award in 2004, the CLA Best Young Adult Book in 2005 and the Borders Original Voice Award in 2006. Her debut novel, Skinny, was published by HarperCollins in May 2004. Kaslik's short stories and articles have appeared in literary magazines such as Matrix and Geist. She went on to major in creative writing at Concordia University and graduated with a Masters of Arts in Creative Writing and English Literature.
